Taking the First Step!

By looking for psychiatrists for my contact list, I learned a lot about how professionals operate their practices. Many psychiatrists might come together to create their own practice where there is a structure of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and even psychologists. This would be a great opportunity when starting into this industry after completing residency as it allows me to take on a role where I can learn from other colleagues while gaining my own experiences with patients. Some psychiatrists also have their own practice with their own website, which I believed would be optimal for when I became more experienced. Having my own practice would allow for more freedom in my hours and what days I want to work.

Through individual research this week, I was able to learn more about schizophrenia and the effects of this mental illness. I find it astounding that schizophrenia can cause ones’ mind to create its own reality, where the delusions of the patient take over their mind and cause them to believe they are being watched or controlled by others. While the illness is very rare, I want to help do more to spread awareness of the very vague symptoms that can indicate if someone has schizophrenia as it is crucial for the illness to be treated at the earliest possible time.
