Looking down at my phone to see a notification on my phone from Band, I was surprised to see that we had a speech to do on Thursday! Despite doing many speeches this year, I still can be very nervous when doing them. However, that nervousness quickly receded when I realized my confidence in my public speaking. I had the power to speak about anything and decided to talk about my favorite TV show of all time, The Office. Creating my speech was very exciting and I enjoyed being creative but I feel I may have scripted too much. During the actual presentation, I could feel that I had progressed in my body language and my eye contact with the audience. Furthermore, my visuals were great but I do feel I could have talked slower and used more inflection, which is the aspect of public speaking that I struggle the most with. Altogether, I feel the process of ISM has vastly improved my public speaking skills and I am looking forward to my next chance to give a speech!
Besides this, I was able to meet with my mentor who gave me more advice on my original work and looked at my research on the 3 clusters of personality disorders. Dr. Uddin was also able to walk me through the process of diagnosing a patient, which begins with ruling out any medical conditions or substance abuse situations. I found this very interesting because Dr. Uddin told me that if a patient that he is confronted with has a medical condition, he would have to be the one to treat it. This is why medical school is necessary for being a psychiatrist and really exemplifies the versatility that is demanded from a psychiatrist. I am looking forward to continuing my research into next week for my original work and looking for more questions to ask Dr. Uddin, on topics like sports psychiatry and having a private practice, during our next meeting which will take place on Wednesday, February 24th.
